Anchorage’s Turnagain neighborhood is solarized!

What does it take to get more than 85 homes in one neighborhood to convert to solar power in a short Alaska summer? A motivated community and a solar contractor that’s ready to rock.

Arctic Solar Ventures was thrilled to be selected by Turnagain as its contractor for the neighborhood’s Solarize Anchorage program.

Organized by the Alaska Center and the Alaska Center for Energy and Power, Solarize Anchorage’s mission is to make residential and small commercial solar energy systems affordable and accessible for the average home or property owner.

It works by helping neighbors team up to collectively purchase the materials needed for a solar installation in bulk, at significantly discounted rates, and tacking on any available state and federal incentives as well. The cost of installation is further driven down thanks to customers living in the same general area, which allows the contractor to complete multiple installations far more efficiently.

This summer, ASV installed solar on more than 85 homes in the Turnagain neighborhood, and homeowners are already seeing the payoff. The cost savings from a solar installation pay for the project in as little as seven years.I

If the homeowner decides to sell before they reach that payoff, solar increases the appraised value of a home by about 4%.

Other neighborhoods participating in the Solarize Anchorage program this year were Spenard, Rogers Park and South Addition. Several more neighborhoods are considering registering for Solarize 2020.

More about what it means to be a B Corp

A B Corp company must meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability, balancing profit and purpose. B Corp Certification doesn’t just evaluate a product or service. The certification assesses the overall positive impact of the company that stands behind those products and services.

Using the B Impact Assessment, B Lab evaluates how a company’s operations and business model impacts its workers, community, environment, and customers. Other companies named to the 2019 Best For The World lists include Patagonia, Beautycounter, Dr. Bronner’s, TOMS, and more.

ASV Named LG Platinum Pro Partner

The only solar company in Alaska to achieve such designation

Regarding the honor, ASV founder & CEO, Stephen Trimble said, “Our partnership with LG gives us a huge advantage in the rapidly growing Alaska solar market. Anchorage, AK 7/23/2019—With renewable energy expected to be the fastest growing source of U.S. electricity generation for at least the next two years, local solar installer Arctic Solar Ventures (ASV) is happy to be contributing to the country’s energy mix. Arctic Solar Ventures has been recognized by Solar Power World magazine for its installation efforts, achieving a rank of 386 out of 415 solar companies on the magazine’s 2019 Top Solar Contractors list. ASV retains its number one ranking in Alaska for the second straight year as well as being ranked the 191st EPC contractor.

The Top Solar Contractors list is developed by Solar Power World to recognize the work completed by solar contractors across the United States. Produced annually, the Top Solar Contractors list celebrates the achievements of U.S. solar developers, subcontractors and installers within the utility, commercial and residential markets, and ranks contractors by kilowatts installed in the previous year.

Solar Power World enjoys assembling the Top Solar Contractors list each year, and our 2019 edition features hundreds of companies making big impacts in local energy markets,” said Kelly Pickerel, editor in chief of Solar Power World. “Solar power is becoming competitive with traditional electricity sources in more markets, and cities and states are demanding more renewable energy options. It’s a great time to be a solar installer, and we’re happy to highlight the best installation companies in the country on our list.”

The U.S. solar market is expected to see 14% growth in 2019, with over 12 GW of new solar power added to the grid this year — enough to power 2.28 million average American homes. This increase in installations is attributed to strong residential solar interest and a rush to get projects in before the 30% federal investment tax credit steps down to 26% next year.  Arctic Solar Ventures has seen continued strong growth in 2019 with over one megawatt of operating projects that will double by 2020.

The emerging energy storage market will also influence solar installations going forward. In markets that encourage grid service applications like time-of-use (TOU) shifting, self-consumption and backup power, battery systems paired with solar arrays are attractive options for home and business owners looking to save costs. Solar Power World included the first Solar+Storage Installer sublist in the 2019 Top Solar Contractors edition in recognition of solar installers’ early efforts at coupling the two technologies for customers.

Arctic Solar Ventures employs nine Alaskans who installed 384 killowatts of solar power in 2018. Since its founding in 2015, the company has installed over one megawatt of solar. The company continues to lead the residential and commercial solar markets in Alaska.

“We are proud to be featured in the 2019 Top Contractors List for the second straight year as we continue to place Alaska solar on the map. Our team appreciates making a 36 place jump from our 2018 rankings. We look forward to continued strong growth in 2020”.
